Less than a week until the convention!

Ok so now I'm going to provide the full details on my story I'm working on for The Working Press.

Hagit Limor sort of had the initial idea to allow laid off SPJ members, who have memberships about to expire, six months extension on their membership. This is helping the business and helping journalists want to stay in journalism. It's an exciting story and I had my interview with her this morning :)

The national convention is approaching VERY soon and I am excited beyond words. Everything is kind of creeping up on me. I've got a ton of family to hang out with and it doesn't seem I have enough time. I'm happy that a lot of people are going to miss me here :)

Still on the to-do list:
update resumé
put clips on CDs
pack professional attire for convention
wash car before trip
get hair cut
interview others for SPJ story
visit Sarah, Josh, Keith, Mary, Brian, Madonna, Aaron+family and whoever else wants to see me before I leave!

My very last sad day

Today is strange.

For one, I'm saddened. Today is my last day at the paper and it feels surreal. I'm looking at these people that guided me through everything these past few months, joked with me about crazy small town sources, life in Indiana, how much they all dislike Marion in one way or another and the state of journalism.

I had a good talk with the business reporter here, Brett, about how things are going in journalism. Since two editors left the paper, we haven't found editors to replace them - but the kicker is, he told me they've eliminated a huge chunk of staff but are expected to do at least 50 percent more the workload. Designers are the first ones being ditched (they always were the unsung heroes.)

I don't know if I could ever leave the business. I am far too deep in this love affair with journalism to leave. Of course, I have yet to be out of a journalism job.

I think I'll miss the reporters the most because they're the ones that taught me the most (besides Tricia and Andrea). AJ, Mischelle, Brett and Maribeth all welcomed me with open arms when I came to the paper. I think AJ put it best when she said "you know how to treat an intern by having been an intern yourself." It was a sigh of relief having come into a city I've never been to, having my first internship and knowing only one person.

I believe I've made friends in all of them and they're a talented group. I hope that none of them will be victim to the state of the business.

My last day at the paper was nothing like I expected. I received a thank you card from the entire staff with sweet notes and a gift card to Starbucks (which is amazing :) ) I really did want to cry, but I forced myself not to.

The executive editor also offered a job opening to me after college, which was flattering to me. It's the icing on top of the internship cake I was looking for.

Today was amazing - I couldn't have asked for more.

My apologies

Yes, I haven't updated in 10 days. I am ashamed and apologetic to those who read my blog.

This last week has been a trip. It's been...interesting to put it lightly. I cannot go into full detail on here, but the newsroom has been changing drastically in such a short period of time. Last week, I did many online video updates, which you can see on the left panel there. I will put in my newest one once I get it done today below for your viewing pleasure.

I have just a few more days left here and I had to conjure up a 5-page paper last night detailing what I've learned through my experiences. It wasn't hard to fill up - a lot of things went on.

I think people thought I didn't get much out of this internship and that I'd be speeding out of here. However, it is my philosophy that everything is a learning experience and I am grateful for what the Chronicle gave me.

- As silly as it sounds to those of you who know me, I became less inhibited about reporting news in front of the camera. As I did more videos, I stumbled less, became less nervous, more confident.

- I learned the politics of a professional newsroom, where reporting the story, editing and putting together the paper is a passion, but also a means to survive in the world. I learned how the publisher, advertising department and editorial work together and just how huge Sunday is around here.

- I learned that I should really be proud of what I'm doing at the school paper. It isn't much different than what the professionals are doing, it's just on a larger scale with different challenges.

I have very little time left total in Indiana - less than three weeks now. It is bittersweet. I'll miss being able to see my cousins, uncles and aunts almost every weekend - a luxury I don't get in Texas.

However, I still have a little of A LOT left to go - the big time. Wish me luck.

Joan

SO much to tell

I've got much to tell - and this is news from both internships.

I'll start with my most current one:

I got assigned an extra story and it's a sweet feature about this church in Van Buren that did mission work locally instead of overseas this year. One piece of the story in particular really tugs at the heart. The church surprised one of their members by painting her house. I went to the elementary school down the street where she was helping with registration and got her take on it and as soon as I mentioned it, she started to cry and it was the sweetest thing. She was super grateful and gave spectacular quotes. I'll put up the story later if you guys request it (it publishes Aug. 4).

I've been designing a lot more lately and today I did FIVE wire pages. It was insane, but I'm getting better and faster.

I've done a few videos, but one of them repeats so unless you want to see my beautiful face twice, you can stop it after the first time.

I truly do think I get better every time. I know I've got a LONG way to go, but practice makes me better everyday.

Last but not least, my BIG news.

I got an e-mail from my adviser at the Working Press and she told me to go ahead and go for a story idea I had. The story is on a nine-time Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist who has been very active with SPJ. She helped spearhead an initiative that helps unemployed journalists. I met her at the regional conference earlier this year and she's accomplished so much in her career and she really motivated me when I spoke with her the few times I did. More on that later.

So if that's just my first assignment, just imagine the array of assignments that will come my way in the future!

I'm ecstatic:)

Disappointments, but you forge ahead

Reality sets in now - something about the air around here.

I'll break it down for everyone: my big project got folded into a regular Sunday section due to only three ad sales. The reporters were mad, and I was half mad, half not considering that 2/3 of my stories weren't working anyway.

So now my big special section is just a regular Sunday business section with a crazy amount of going green content. However, because I persevere and because I choose to be a positive person, I am going to push on and make this the best Sunday business section they've ever had.

Tomorrow I'm coming in to finish up going green content and hopefully get everything done for that and start designing. About the only time I feel absolutely sure, confident and cool in that newsroom is when I'm doing a video or designing a page. Maybe I found my specialty?

Not sure - still always on the search in finding myself but I feel awfully close :)

God, I'm tired.

Another video

So sources aren't calling me back all day, so I decided I was going to make productive use of my time and help the rest of the reporters out with their busy schedules and do the video again - naturally I didn't mind :)

*sigh* procrastination

So lately I've been procrastinating because I'm dreading calling a source who's mad at the paper. THAT I will have to get over.

However, I do feel like I'm starting to fall into a nice groove with the paper, the routine and my coworkers. I came in on Saturday and was surprised to see only one reporter, AJ. I told her I thought journalism never stopped, but apparently on the weekend, only the designers come in and only one reporter comes in.

I came Saturday to cover a neighborhood reunion, but due to rain, it was postponed until later so I came back to the newsroom and AJ took me to the jail and the police station to do the crime blotter. That was neat and I got to learn that you never look up when you hear pounding on the windows of the jail (haha).

Well, ya learn something new everyday.

I went to the reunion and everyone was super friendly and I got to know a few people really well. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be reconnecting with their past and I wrote a fabulous piece on it that will publish this Friday. It's probably the most feature-y one I've written so far for the paper, so look forward to a Joan feature special.

First true broadcasting experience..

If you check out the side panel to your left or in this post, you'll see a new video at the top with some chick in the frame (that's me).

I volunteered to do the daily news video for the day and all the reporters happily obliged simply because they HATE doing those and getting in front of the camera. I love the camera so naturally I went for it. Although it took four takes and me saying "That's your news for July 2008" three times instead of "that's your news for July 8."

Other than that, I'm covering a story on Saturday about a neighborhood reunion which should be piece-o-cake. Then Saturday night, I'm going out to eat THANK GOD haha.

Got lots of projects

Nothing TOO terribly exciting going on today. I'm doing a story on new projectors a school district is getting and the guy I interviewed said "Didn't you come a little too far to be writing about projectors?"

That made me laugh - ha:)

Designed the front page!

Yeah you saw it right - I designed the front page of one of the papers that the Chronicle owns. I designed the front page of the Wabash Plain Dealer for Thursday's paper.

I was ecstatic that they let moi, the intern, design such an important portion of the paper. Today, the editor also made up the budget for the special section I'm designing.

Soon to come: pdfs/examples of my work if I can get them up here. If anyone knows how to do that - let me know!

Burnt to a crisp, but I did a video!

The weekend at a water park left me barely able to move, but I got over to the newsroom to do my video today on the fair, and I finished it!

The program was kind of hard to navigate, but with the help of how-to youtube videos, one of the editors and some common sense, I completed it.

You can see it here or on the sidebar at your left.

Cool news

So...today was my day off, but I found out that my editor told the night crew in the newsroom that "Our intern is rocking this section."

So good to hear! Some feedback on how I'm doing, and it's good. That kind of gave me a boost and I now have the momentum to start doing bigger, better things.

Did I mention that the entire local section was all my work? And my story on the water park was the dominant on the special section front? Yeah, definitely cool.

Video should be up Monday - I've worked my butt off on it all week, so now comes the editing part.

What's fair is Fair

LONG day today.

PART I: Got up at 7:30. Got to the fairgrounds at 9:30, covered my first-ever cow and dairy show where kids parade their cows around for trophies and other such prizes, and don't forget the notoriety! My sources told me it's supposed to build character and responsibility for the kids involved. So I went back to the newsroom at 1 and wrote the story.

PART II: Went back up to the fairgrounds at 4:30 and got some shots around the place, then I went to cover the doggie fashion show. It was cute, and it's a quaint little secondary story. I went through some of the tents and this guy who tried to get me to register to vote even though I was already registered to vote tried to argue politics with me. I told him I can't say anything because I'm on the job. After much heat outside and a hamburger I bought for 3 bucks, it was time to rush back to the newsroom to write up the second story.

PART III: So it had already been a super long day, but I lugged the camera out again and went back to the fairgrounds where it was more busy than ever. I walked around looking for good shots and finally planted myself in front of a hefty ride, went to check my white balance annnnd....my battery was dead. Lesson learned? Never leave the newsroom without checking your battery life.

My fear of large farm animals

My fear of large farm animals was challenged today - went to cover the 4-H fairs and was inches away from pigs, cows, horses, turkeys, chickens, bunnies and goats.

Needless to say it was interesting, but I think the fair really encompasses what the county is all about. This is what people look forward to - oh yeah, and there's food there too :)

Camera's heavy and having a bit of trouble getting back into the groove of videoing, but I think this exercise will be really good for me.

Cost of gas is sucking me dry of money

Busy busy busy today at the paper - well not as busy as my co-workers, but much busier than I have been.

Had four interviews today - not including the 10 people I interviewed splashing around a water park. It was a delight to get out of the newsroom and go talk to people face-to-face. It's the spirit of reporting I have again within myself, and I am in love again.

I really want to go to that water park in my own bathing suit and have some fun though. It's fun being in the small town and seeing what people do - or don't do. Had a meeting about the special section today with the ad director, editor and Brett, a fellow reporter. So we'll get that on the ground soon.

Finished two stories, looking forward to seeing my name in print in a professional newspaper!

Next week's agenda: 4-H fairs (I'm covering the beef show for my story and the entire fair all week for the video). Also, finishing up my gas derricks story. I interviewed the mayor of Gas City and he's quite a nice man.

Like the small-town charm. It's been a tad of a culture shock, but hey, I could use a little change of pace :)

I have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off - to relax and job hunt. *joy*

Drive to Marion doesn't get any better and it's really sucking up my funds. Job search continues - if anyone has any ideas, shoot them at me.

More assignments, interesting interactions with sources

Knocked out the kid camp story - although the last interaction with my source was...interesting...I just hope she talks to me again if I need her, since she was rude on the phone.

Got another assignment to do a story on a water park in town that's kind of a big deal. Doing a walkthrough with the director of the park tomorrow - so it's my first face-to-face source interview of my internship. It'll be really nice to get out of the office and not be glued to the computer all day.

I also did a video for the site today - although not complicated and fairly simple, it gave me a chance to work with the camera. Seen here

They don't put their videos on Youtube...which I think it would reach a much larger audience if they did so...

Met some more people around the newsroom today and everyone is SUPER nice and the reporters can always give me the numbers I need.

I'm enjoying it more everyday - although the drive doesn't get any better.

More assignments, now we're rolling

Today was nice - came into the office and started working on my story for the local section. It's about this woman who had her son die of leukemia a while ago and in his memory, she's starting a day camp for children with chronic diseases. Sources haven't been too hard to contact, seeing how she's super involved in the community. Sweet cause, fairly easy story - I'm cranking it out.

Tomorrow is the first day I get to work with a professional broadcast-quality camera and I'll be shooting the daily news cast for the web - just to familiarize myself with the system.

Next week I'm covering the fair all week and will be both videoing and writing stories. After that, I start planning my "going green" special section. Should I contact my friend Sarah on these matters? Probably :)

First official day

First day was kind of boring, just getting ID and getting acquainted. Went to dinner with one of the editors and her husband. Was nice to get to chat with them.

In my future: two stories out of Gas City for the local/our towns section and planning a special section called "going green." - which would be awesome for my portfolio!

First Assignment

So I got an e-mail from my editor today and I have my first assignment-type deal.

Grant County Fair is coming up when I start Monday and I have to think of some video ideas to cover the event. I'm really excited and I can't wait to come in Monday for my first day and already have those ideas ready.

It would also be really awesome to go out and shoot and edit those videos. I'll be working afternoons most of the time, so that'll fit my schedule just right.

Second Day in Indiana

Went to pick up my mother from the airport today and got to go through downtown Indianapolis while we were at it - beautiful! Want to spend a day there if I can just to shop, see sites and whatnot.

One thing I've realized after traveling so far was that...America is beautiful. You often don't see that when you stay within one area for so long. Each place has it's own claim to beauty - Muncie included.

Going to hopefully see some family tomorrow and get my hair cut from a woman who's been cutting my hair since I was 5 and my mother's hair since she was 13! Don't worry, she's still super hip :)

Made it to Indiana

I finally made it after a 16-hour trip. It's almost a blur. I feel like I've done nothing all day, yet here I am 1,000 miles north and if there weren't signs telling me I was entering and leaving states, I wouldn't be able to differentiate among the states.

I am exhausted and I am going to retire to bed. From now-on, I will be updating every day on this blog so check back frequently!

Thanks everyone,
Joan

Exactly One Week

I hit the road June 7 - anxious to get snacks, clean up car, get the car checked out and program my destination!

Got almost everything squared away - I just need to finish registering for my Fall semester classes. Good news again though - I am graduating on time in May! I just have 11 classes left and I am done and can enter the professional world of journalism. I am absolutely happy about that because it'll be another chapter in my life.

I'll be updating more often from now-on because my internship starts in two weeks. Wish me luck!

p.s.-To all that are following me this summer through this blog, I thank you for your support :)

Major UPDATE

UPDATE:

I got a second internship with The Working Press in Indianapolis, Ind. This is a huge honor! It's basically a three-day intensive internship in which I'll be producing a paper covering the Society of Professional Journalists national convention. I was one of 12 student journalists selected in the U.S. I will be copy editing for the internship.

This is huge for me and I'm so excited to start my summer in Indiana.
